Rural Broadband Internet Initiative

Residents of Yellowhead County

We are excited to inform you about an ongoing project to expand high-speed internet access throughout rural areas of the County.  Through a program that is funded jointly by Yellowhead County, the Government of Alberta, and the Federal Government of Canada, construction is underway for a system that will offer high speed internet service in areas that are currently underserved, through a combination of fiber optic and wireless technology.

If you have seen telecom construction crews in your area, or if you learned of this web site through communications that were sent directly to you, then your home may qualify for installation of the service to your home at no cost.  Simply provide us with your information by clicking on the link below and completing the form.  We will then review your location to confirm whether your home is considered eligible and then contact you with the results.  Assuming you are eligible and authorize an installation, we will arrange a time to dispatch a crew to complete the work.

This installation will include mounting a radio (which is a square panel approximately 12″ x 12″) at a suitable height and location for optimal signal strength.  Typically this will be on the roof, or mounted to the side of the house as high as possible. A cable will run from the radio down the exterior wall to a small junction box that will be installed on the outside of the house, approximately three feet above ground level. Please note that while efforts will be made to accommodate homeowner preferences regarding the junction box location, the final placement will be at the installer’s discretion if necessary for technical or structural reasons.

The installer will align and test the radio to ensure it is able to establish a connection, and you will be added to the list of residences that are able to sign up for internet services.  At this point, the initial installation will be complete (there is no need at this time for the radio installer to enter your home to install any cables or devices).

Once the initial installation is finished, an ISP (Internet Service Provider) will contact you to provide options and pricing for services.  In the interest of keeping the cost to residents as low as possible, this network is designed to allow multiple ISPs to offer services, so there may be multiple options for you to decide between.  Once you sign up for a service, the ISP will send a technician to complete the final hookup, which entails running the cable into your home, installing a power injector to provide power to the radio, and setting up any additional equipment, such as a home router, based on the plan you select.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Wireless connections of this nature normally require there to be line of sight, or at least near line of sight, from the home to the communication tower where the base station radios are located.  At some home locations, if there are hills, thick trees or other obstructions that block the line of sight to the tower, the radio may need to be elevated higher than a rooftop mount will allow, in order to establish a solid connection.  In these cases, any additional infrastructure (communication towers or other appropriate structures) needed at the home to achieve that height would be the responsibility of the homeowner, and would not be provided or paid for by this project.  This will be determined either during our initial review of your location, or once the installers arrive (if in doubt, they will perform a field test to check the signal before proceeding with installation), and if we are unable to complete the installation we will notify you and provide further details.

Key Benefits

  • Free Installation: No upfront costs for equipment installation*.
  • No Obligation: You are not required to subscribe to a service after installation.
  • Enhanced Connectivity: Gain access to high-speed internet options in your area at competitive rates.

* note that the free installation is available for a limited time while the project construction is underway (the ‘build period’).  Residents that did not approve of an installation during the build period that subsequently request installation at a future date will be responsible for all labour and travel costs.
